Nations competing at the 2026 Fifa World Cup were required to name their final 26-man squads no later than Monday, 1 June.<\/b><\/p>\n
Fifa then officially confirmed the final squads a day later on Tuesday, 2 June.<\/p>\n
From that point, teams can only make changes to their squads for two reasons.<\/p>\n
The first is in the event of a player sustaining a serious injury or illness. This player is allowed to be officially replaced in the squad up to 24 hours before kick-off of the team’s first match of the tournament.<\/p>\n
Scotland made a change to their final squad 12 days after head coach Steve Clarke first named his 26-man side, following an injury to Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour during their friendly win over Curacao.<\/p>\n
Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher was selected in Gilmour’s place.<\/p>\n
South Korea, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Ivory Coast, Sweden, Austria and DR Congo have also had to make alterations to their initial final squads.<\/p>\n
After the 24-hour cut-off, a team is not allowed to make any further changes to their outfield playing squad.<\/p>\n
The only exception comes in the form of goalkeepers.<\/p>\n
If a goalkeeper sustains a serious injury or illness, they are allowed to be replaced at any time during the tournament.<\/p>\n
A team’s final squad can contain between 23 and 26 players, of which at least three of them must be goalkeepers.<\/p>\n
Like many of their tournament rivals, both England and Scotland named final squads of 26 players that included three goalkeepers.<\/p>\n
