Former West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand has taken his first senior coaching job by joining National League newcomers Hornchurch.<\/b><\/p>\n

Ferdinand, brother of former Manchester United and England defender Rio, is reunited with his former Hammers team-mate, Hornchurch boss Daryl McMahon.<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old’s arrival is the second high-profile appointment the Urchins have made this summer, having brought in<\/a> former Newcastle United and England midfielder Robert Lee as director of football.<\/p>\n

Ferdinand will act as first-team coach as part of McMahon’s backroom staff in Hornchurch’s first season at National League level following promotion last term.<\/p>\n

“I’ve known Daryl a long time, we go back to when (we were) 11, 12 years old,” Ferdinand said. “I am delighted to try to add value to what he has already achieved here.<\/p>\n

“The fact he’s wanted me to come here and try to get us to the next level is humbling but something I’m really excited about.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great place for me to come and learn from him but also give the experience I’ve had as a player over a 20-year career.<\/p>\n

“I’m looking forward to waking up every day with a purpose to make players better and help Daryl continue the success he’s had.”<\/p>\n

Ferdinand has primarily acted as a pundit since ending a 16-year playing career in 2019 that also took in spells with Sunderland, QPR and Reading, along with 17 caps for England Under-21.<\/p>\n
