{"id":6145,"date":"2026-06-28T15:34:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T15:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/racingsport.xyz\/?p=6145"},"modified":"2026-06-28T15:34:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T15:34:55","slug":"world-cup-2026-how-fifa-president-gianni-infantino-is-jetting-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/racingsport.xyz\/?p=6145","title":{"rendered":"World Cup 2026: How Fifa president Gianni Infantino is jetting around"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Fifa has committed to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reaching net-zero by 2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For this year&#8217;s tournament, the world football governing body set out a number of environmental pledges, including:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-2st5ed-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">hosting teams regionally which reduces &#8220;reliance on long-haul travel for a significant proportion of attendees&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">efforts to increase the energy efficiency by promoting the use of electric cars, public transport and water conservation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">the use of existing stadiums<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, even before the first ball was kicked on 11 June, there was scepticism from some climate scientists given the scale of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A 2025 report from Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) estimated the overall carbon footprint of this World Cup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/cgjgw4l2717o\" class=\"ssrcss-18834jl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">could reach nine million tonnes of CO2e.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It said this would equate to almost double the average for the past four World Cups, making this year&#8217;s tournament the most polluting ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/65834022\" class=\"ssrcss-18834jl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">a Swiss regulator said<\/a> Fifa had &#8220;made false statements&#8221; by claiming that Qatar 2022 would be the first carbon-neutral World Cup in history by using investments in low-carbon initiatives to offset emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In response to the ruling, Fifa said it is &#8220;fully aware that climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time and believes it requires each of us to take immediate and sustainable climate action&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Infantino attended all 64 matches at the last World Cup in Qatar, where the eight stadiums used were separated by about an hour&#8217;s drive at most &#8211; but this year&#8217;s tournament spanning an entire continent presents a very different challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><i class=\"ssrcss-xbdn93-ItalicText e5tfeyi2\">Additional reporting by Mark Poynting.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fifa has committed to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reaching net-zero by 2040.
