Toronto has the honour of hosting Canada’s first men’s World
Cup match on home soil. There will be 13 games in total staged in the
country, with six in Toronto and seven taking place 2,000 miles to the west in Vancouver
– including the national team’s final two group fixtures.
The stadium in Toronto is located on the shore of Lake
Ontario. It was built as a venue for the 2007 Fifa Under-20 World Cup and to
provide a home for Toronto FC, who became an MLS expansion side the same year.
Capacity has been upgraded for this
tournament with 17,000 temporary seats added to the stadium’s north and south
stands via steep scaffolding – which may be daunting for anyone with a fear of heights. Some
fans sitting there for MLS games earlier this year described an unsettling
swaying sensation when winds picked up.
